I bet all your life you’ve been told to drink milk because it’s essential to making you grow big and strong. Milk is crucial to being healthy and just as important as paying your taxes. But just like our forefathers shouted, “no taxation without representation,” let me retort, “no milkation without investigation.” Who has been telling you that milk’s so crucial? Parents, teachers, and random strangers off the street. It is the milk farmers who have filled their minds with “Got Milk?” ads and cereal companies following suit in lobbying milk as an essential breakfast item.
I do acknowledge that babies need milk, but it is breast milk they need. In fact babies aren’t even supposed to drink cow’s milk until 1 year old, but by that time they should be eating solid foods. Cow milk drinking children are encouraged to decrease their milk intake to less than 20 ounces to have room for other food more nutritious in vitamins. Too much of this white liquid will give kids anemia because it binds to iron and our red blood cells need iron, increased cavities, and gastrointestinal upset. Milk is indeed an adequate source of calcium. So are normal diets and calcium pills… In fact one calcium supplement equals 3 glasses of milk. It’ll save you all that gulping, and it comes with Vitamin D which only some fortified milk have. If you think about it, milk is just calories, fat, cholesterol, and some calcium -nothing special or magical about it.
And don’t you think it’s odd that we’re the only creatures who drink the milk of other species. Anything coming from a structure called an udder is questionable in my book. Now steak on the other hand… is essential to a well balanced diet.
